NorthStar Successfully Completes Decommissioning Deal for GE Hitachi Vallecitos Nuclear Center

NorthStar Nuclear Secures Regulatory Approval for Vallecitos Nuclear Center Acquisition

NorthStar Group Services, Inc. announced today the successful completion of the transfer of ownership of the Vallecitos Nuclear Center in Sunol, CA, from GE Vernova Inc. and GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy Americas, LLC. This transfer allows NorthStar to commence nuclear decontamination, decommissioning, and environmental restoration at the 1600-acre site. The agreement, initially disclosed in May 2023, was finalized following approvals from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the license transfer from GE-Hitachi to NorthStar.

Scott State, P.E., NorthStar CEO, expressed gratitude for GEH’s confidence in NorthStar’s expertise in safely and efficiently decommissioning nuclear sites. The deal structure mirrors NorthStar’s successful acquisition and decommissioning of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station, recognized by NRC officials as exemplary. The Vallecitos decommissioning project is already underway, with NorthStar having reached a significant milestone in November 2023 by removing the Vallecitos boiling water reactor for disposal at Waste Control Specialists, LLC in Texas.

The Vallecitos complex, housing various reactors and facilities, will undergo restoration to enable future commercial or industrial use. NorthStar’s experience in decommissioning is further showcased in their ongoing project at the Crystal River 3 nuclear reactor complex in Florida. For more information on the Vallecitos acquisition, refer to the statement issued by GEH.

NorthStar Group Services, Inc., based in New York, offers comprehensive infrastructure and environmental solutions with over 35 years of experience. The company is licensed in all 50 states and has a proven track record in decommissioning projects for both commercial and government clients.

GE Vernova’s Nuclear Energy business, in collaboration with Hitachi, is a leading provider of nuclear fuel bundles and advanced reactor designs. Their technologies include boiling water reactors and innovative designs like the BWRX-300.

In conclusion, NorthStar’s acquisition of the Vallecitos Nuclear Center marks another milestone in their successful decommissioning projects.
