NIEHS Supports National Plan to Mitigate Risks of Extreme Heat

Title: National Heat Strategy: Combating Extreme Heat with Science-Based Solutions

By Isaac Conrad

The National Heat Strategy (NHS) aims to address the pressing issue of extreme heat through science-based solutions. Led by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and various federal agencies, this strategy focuses on improving resources, communication, and decision-making related to dangerous heat.

The NHS is a collaborative effort coordinated by the White House Interagency Working Group on Extreme Heat and the National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS). Key agencies involved include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Centers for Disease Control, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Federal Emergency Management Administration.

Extreme heat, worsened by climate change, poses a significant health challenge globally. Thousands of people die from heat exposure annually, and temperatures, along with the frequency of heat waves, are expected to rise. The summer of 2023 marked Earth’s hottest on record, with 2024 following suit by breaking high temperature records.

NIEHS-supported research has long studied the impacts of heat on various aspects of health, including the heart, kidneys, mental health, and worker safety. This body of knowledge has informed the development of the NHS. Ongoing research under the NIH Climate Change and Health Initiative will further explore the effects of heat on health and contribute to the formulation of prevention and response policies.

The strategy will facilitate coordination among federal agencies to achieve its goals. NIHHIS has initiated the implementation of the strategy by:

The National Heat Strategy was launched on August 14. For more information on interagency efforts to combat heat-related challenges, please visit heat.gov.

Overall, the NHS represents a crucial step towards addressing the impacts of extreme heat through collaborative efforts and science-based solutions. By prioritizing research and coordination, the strategy aims to enhance preparedness and response to heat-related health risks.
