“Albumin is a well-established surrogate marker for survival in dialysis patients,” stated Karin Hehenberger, MD, PhD, Chief Medical Officer of Patient Care America. “This evidence-based research is just the beginning of our contribution to improving outcomes for those living with kidney disease.”
The 5-year retrospective review of data across 1,039 dialysis centers in 43 U.S. states and Washington D.C. analyzed 2,270 charts of adult patients receiving IDPN therapy three times per week concurrent with their regular dialysis sessions. A total of 1,631 patients consented and were eligible for the study.
Key findings include:
- 82% of patients achieved a clinically meaningful rise in albumin (≥0.2 g/dL) in the first 6 months.
- A mean increase of 0.330 g/dL in serum albumin levels over 6 months of IDPN therapy.
- Patients with lower baseline albumin and those who were younger showed a faster and more significant improvement.
- Fewer than 8% of patients reported minor, treatable side effects—underscoring IDPN’s safety profile.
“I am very pleased to see that this largest evidence-based study clearly demonstrates that administration of IDPN to albumin deficient patients on hemodialysis raises their albumin levels in a consistent and prolonged manner. Since these patients frequently need many surgical interventions, their overall recovery, including wound healing, has been repeatedly linked to their nutritional status as measured by their albumin levels,” said Mark A.
