Tennessee Valley Authority Seeks Proposals for 100MW Battery Storage System in Roane County
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is inviting top Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) developers to submit proposals for a cutting-edge 100-megawatt BESS at the Kingston Energy Complex in Roane County, Tennessee. The energy complex, currently under construction, will boast a robust energy portfolio, including 750 megawatts of combined cycle natural gas, 800 megawatts of flex-fuel aeroderivative turbines, 100 megawatts of battery storage, and up to four megawatts of solar power—enough to power around 900,000 homes.
TVA is on the lookout for qualified integrators and providers to design, engineer, build, operate, and maintain the BESS, with a requirement for commercial operation by 2029. Interested developers are urged to preregister at tva.com/KingstonBESSRFP to be part of the bidding process. TVA plans to release the bid packet to registered developers in late March or early April, with the bid due date to follow.
This initiative is in line with TVA’s commitment to harness American energy to fuel regional growth. The region has seen a 2.9% growth in GDP over the past five years, outpacing the national average, and a decrease in the unemployment rate by 0.3%. The region’s population, particularly the working-age and under-20 demographic, has been growing faster than the national average.
Pending approvals and legal processes, TVA’s current plan includes the construction of approximately 5,500 megawatts of new firm, dispatchable generation by 2029. Apart from Kingston, construction is underway at Shawnee, Kentucky, Cumberland and Johnsonville in Tennessee, with completed projects at Paradise in Kentucky and Colbert in Alabama. Future projects are also under consideration in Tennessee and Mississippi.
As the nation’s largest public power supplier, TVA serves over 10 million consumers across seven states with a diverse energy mix that includes nuclear, hydro, solar, gas, and advanced technologies. The agency maintains some of the lowest energy costs and highest reliability in the country, with residential and industrial rates lower than a significant percentage of customers of the top 100 utilities.
In conclusion, TVA’s call for BESS proposals for the Kingston Energy Complex marks a significant step towards enhancing the region’s energy infrastructure and driving economic prosperity. This initiative aligns with TVA’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, ensuring a reliable and affordable energy supply for millions of consumers.
