A new database consisting of 334 tools, services, and platforms utilized by nonprofits for the public interest to enhance network security and empower Internet users was unveiled during the first anniversary celebration of Common Good Cyber in London. The event, titled “Bridging the Gap: Delivering Cybersecurity to High-Risk Actors,” was inaugurated by Andrew Whittaker, Head of Cyber Policy Department at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), with a keynote address by Jonathan Allen, Director General, Defence and Intelligence, FCDO.
Cyberattacks have been causing disruptions in operations, resulting in financial losses and human consequences such as fraud and abuse. More than 10 million NGOs worldwide are facing cybersecurity threats, but the current support systems are inadequate. The event focused on supporting high-risk actors like journalists, activists, and rights defenders, addressing gaps in cybersecurity resources, and supporting nonprofits that provide these resources.
Common Good Cyber, with support from the UK FCDO and the European Union Institute for Security Studies, reviewed cybersecurity tools and services deployed for public interest to enhance network security and empower Internet users. The outcome was the Common Good Cyber Mapping Database, which categorizes 334 cybersecurity tools and services into six groups: Govern, Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover.
Participants at the event highlighted the need for long-term, unrestricted funding for cybersecurity nonprofits, as organizations currently spend a significant portion of their budgets on securing funding rather than focusing on their mission. Common Good Cyber aims to establish a joint funding mechanism for nonprofit organizations by March 2026. Global Cyber Alliance, the organization behind Common Good Cyber, is dedicated to improving security and resilience for everyone and supporting cybersecurity-focused nonprofits. Policymakers were urged to advocate for better funding for cybersecurity nonprofits, emphasizing the importance of digital security in today’s landscape.
