Indiana Michigan Power Secures Large Load Settlement Order

Indiana Michigan Power Receives IURC Approval for Large Load Tariff Settlement

Indiana Michigan Power (I&M), a subsidiary of American Electric Power (AEP), has recently received approval from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) for its large load tariff settlement. This settlement, filed in late 2024, focuses on customers with substantial energy needs like data centers and large industrial operations.

The joint settlement, which includes key stakeholders such as the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor (OUCC), Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, Google, the Data Center Coalition (DCC), and the Citizens Action Coalition (CAC), underscores I&M’s dedication to providing reliable and affordable services while supporting economic growth in the communities it serves.

The IURC’s approval of the settlement terms, with one modification, establishes new financial commitments for large load customers, ensuring fair cost recovery without burdening existing customers. This investment will also contribute to grid modernization, enhancing reliability for all customers.

The modified settlement order mandates that any reduction exceeding 20% of a large load customer’s contracted peak capacity must be reviewed and approved by the IURC. This ensures transparency and oversight regarding significant changes in customer commitments.

“I&M remains committed to providing top-notch service while supporting community growth,” said Steve Baker, I&M President and COO. “We are excited to lead with innovative solutions that meet the region’s growing energy demands while maintaining affordability and reliability for all customers.”

The IURC’s recognition of the energy needs of large load customers emphasizes additional requirements for these customers to ensure a balance between their interests and those of existing customers. This new structure enables I&M to optimize its investments in generation and transmission facilities, ultimately benefiting all customers.

In recent years, major companies like AWS and Google have announced multi-billion-dollar investments in data centers in Indiana, creating jobs and boosting economic development. I&M is in discussions with other large load customers interested in establishing operations in northeast Indiana.

Headquartered in Fort Wayne, I&M serves over 600,000 customers with a commitment to emission-free energy. With diverse generation sources including nuclear, wind, hydro, and solar power, the company is well-positioned to meet the region’s energy needs.

American Electric Power (AEP), I&M’s parent company, is dedicated to enhancing service and supporting community growth with a $54 billion investment from 2025 to 2029. AEP operates the nation’s largest electric transmission system and is focused on safety, operational excellence, and stakeholder value.

In conclusion, I&M’s approval of the large load tariff settlement highlights its commitment to providing reliable and affordable energy while supporting economic growth in Indiana. The company’s partnerships with major corporations and its focus on sustainability and innovation position it as a leader in the energy sector. For more information, visit IndianaMichiganPower.com.
