Georgia Tech Climbs Higher in Research Rankings: NSF HERD Survey 2023 Results

The National Science Foundation recently published the findings of its annual Higher Education Research and Development Survey (HERD), revealing Georgia Tech’s impressive ascent in the rankings. Once again, Georgia Tech has moved up to No. 16, showcasing its dedication to research excellence. Among universities without a medical school, Georgia Tech holds the top spot, demonstrating its commitment to advancing knowledge and innovation.

In terms of federally funded research, Georgia Tech now ranks No. 3, a significant improvement from its previous position at No. 5. Additionally, the Institute is ranked No. 7 for all externally funded research, moving up from No. 9. These rankings reflect the outstanding efforts of Georgia Tech’s faculty, staff, and research sponsors in driving impactful research initiatives.

According to Timothy Charles Lieuwen, interim executive vice president for Research at Georgia Tech, the Institute’s continued success in research rankings is a testament to the collaborative efforts of its research community. The rise in federally and externally funded research underscores the confidence that partners have in Georgia Tech’s ability to address society’s most pressing challenges.

The annual HERD survey collects data on research and development expenditures from U.S. colleges and universities with research expenditures exceeding $150,000 during a fiscal year. In fiscal year 2023, 914 institutions were included in the survey, contributing to a total U.S. higher-education R&D spending of over $108 billion, marking the largest increase since 2003.

Georgia Tech’s R&D spending in fiscal year 2023 reached $1.45 billion, representing a remarkable 17.9% increase compared to the previous year. This growth, amounting to $219 million, encompasses the entire research enterprise, including the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), which remains a key driver of the Institute’s research endeavors and national defense research initiatives.

Moreover, Georgia Tech’s R&D expenditures have not only fueled innovation but also made a significant impact on the state of Georgia’s economy, contributing a substantial amount to its economic growth. The Institute’s continued focus on commercialization efforts has facilitated the transition of cutting-edge technologies from the lab to the marketplace, further enhancing its societal impact.

Looking ahead, Lieuwen expresses pride in Georgia Tech’s achievements and excitement for the future as the Institute continues to drive innovation that benefits not only the state and the nation but also the global community.
