11th Annual North Carolina Global Health Alliance Conference Recap
The 11th Annual North Carolina Global Health Alliance Conference, held on October 22, 2024, in Raleigh, North Carolina, brought together domestic and global leaders, researchers, and students to explore the intersection of global health findings with local North Carolina settings. Hosted by the North Carolina Global Health Alliance (NCGHA) and sponsored by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the event aimed to convene scientists, amplify findings, and advocate for global health both in North Carolina and abroad. Approximately 250 attendees gathered to discuss the theme of “Bridging North Carolina with the World.”
During the conference, attendees engaged in discussions on best practices for exchanging knowledge with domestic health experts in North Carolina and applying that knowledge to global health work. Funding emerged as a recurring theme, with participants recognizing the importance of adequate financial resources for public health organizations to effectively serve their communities, especially in the post-COVID world.
Keynote addresses, interactive discussions, and poster presentations provided experts, researchers, and students with the opportunity to share their expertise. Breakout sessions covered a wide range of topics to cater to different types of learners. According to NCGHA Executive Director Brianna Clarke-Schwelm, M.P.H., the conference buzzed with energy, enthusiasm, and thoughtful engagement.
Sessions delved into specific topics such as healthcare during crises, resettlement in North Carolina, global health leadership, misinformation and trust, and high-need health priorities globally and within the state. Despite challenges such as siloes and differences in regulations and funding opportunities, there are numerous opportunities for bridging the gap between global health and domestic public health.
Clarke-Schwelm emphasized the importance of cross-collaboration and learning between individuals dedicated to improving health and well-being worldwide. By fostering greater collaboration and knowledge exchange, communities everywhere can benefit from enhanced health outcomes.
In conclusion, the 11th Annual North Carolina Global Health Alliance Conference provided a platform for meaningful discussions, knowledge sharing, and collaboration among global health stakeholders. Moving forward, it is essential to continue advocating for adequate funding for public health organizations and promoting cross-collaboration to address global health challenges effectively. Stay engaged with NCGHA and similar initiatives to contribute to the ongoing efforts to improve health outcomes globally and in North Carolina.
