Title: Disaster Research Response Program Facilitates International Collaboration

By Cassidy Rice

The Disaster Research Response (DR2) program, led by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), plays a crucial role in advancing public health and emergency response research following disasters. This initiative focuses on collecting baseline data immediately after disasters to understand their acute effects on health and improve future disaster response efforts in the United States and beyond.

In a recent workshop co-hosted by the NIEHS DR2 program and the National Institute for Environmental Sciences (NIES) of Japan, participants from Southeast Asia gathered in Kanagawa, Japan to discuss disaster research response in the region. NIEHS director Rick Woychik, Ph.D., and program lead Aubrey Miller, M.D., shared their insights during the event, which aimed to facilitate discussions on responses to complex disasters and the sharing of research efforts related to disasters in the region.

During the workshop, representatives from various countries shared their experiences and insights on extreme events and disasters, health vulnerabilities, air pollution, and social infrastructure evaluation systems. Interactive discussions centered around strategies for improving research coordination, data collection, and sharing, with a focus on building capacity for international disaster research and response efforts moving forward.

The workshop provided a valuable platform for scientists to collaborate, share knowledge, and discuss ways to enhance disaster research response capabilities. Participants expressed enthusiasm about developing a regional “community of practice” to continue working together and strengthening data collection and vital health research in response to disasters.

In conclusion, the Disaster Research Response program continues to play a vital role in advancing disaster research response efforts both domestically and internationally. By fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and building capacity, the program aims to enhance disaster response strategies and improve public health outcomes in the face of disasters. Continued engagement and cooperation among stakeholders will be essential in addressing the challenges posed by disasters and ensuring effective response efforts in the future.
