The Townes Award, named after Dr. Charles H. Townes, a South Carolina native and Nobel Laureate in physics, has been presented by GSSM since 1993 to individuals, businesses, or institutions that have made significant contributions to the state and beyond. Dr. Townes’ groundbreaking research in quantum electronics led to the invention of the laser, showcasing the innovative spirit of South Carolina.

In addition to the Townes Award, GSSM offers various programs and opportunities for students, including residential programs, summer camps, and STEM education initiatives. Interested students can apply for these programs to enhance their learning and explore their potential in science and mathematics.
