7,000 Families Expose Gaps in Care for Opioid-Exposed Children at Rx Summit

DAVIE, Fla., April 2, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Generation O: The National Organization for Opioid-Exposed Children will make its debut as a featured supporter at the 2025 Rx and Illicit Drug Summit, the nation’s premier gathering of leaders tackling the opioid and overdose epidemic. Held April 21–24 in Nashville, this event unites thousands of decision-makers, healthcare professionals, and advocates to confront a crisis that has claimed over one million lives—and left a hidden generation of children in its wake.

Representing 7,000 families raising children with prenatal opioid exposure, Generation O is stepping onto the national stage to demand attention for the half-million kids born into this epidemic. “Every day, 58 more babies arrive with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome,” said Cammy Livingston, Co-Founder and Director of Strategic Partnerships. “These children face a lifetime of health challenges with no standardized care—forgotten by policy, understudied by science, and unsupported by systems meant to protect them.”

In the Exhibit Hall, Generation O will connect with leading voices in addiction prevention, treatment, and recovery, as well as policymakers and law enforcement from across the U.S. This first-ever exhibiting opportunity amplifies their mission: to secure evidence-based protocols and resources for kids navigating higher hospital readmission rates (40% above average), neurodevelopmental delays, and social trauma—all without a roadmap.

“Our story is personal,” Livingston added. “Led by volunteer foster and adoptive parents, we’re the families fighting for these kids. A young woman recently wrote to us on Instagram: ‘I never touched the drugs but suffered homelessness, starvation, and trauma because of those who did. They tell us everything improves at 18, but that’s just not true.’ Her words prove why we’re here—because the children of this epidemic are not just statistics.”

Generation O’s momentum is growing. Recently tapped to partner with the NIH’s landmark Healthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) study, they’re helping researchers recruit affected families. A call to action to the American Academy of Pediatrics pushes for standardized care, spotlighting a healthcare policy gap that drives up costs and fails kids long-term.

The Rx Summit features luminaries like past speakers Presidents Biden, Trump, Clinton, and Obama. For Generation O, it’s a chance to shift the narrative from overdose stats to the living legacy of the crisis. “We’re honored to stand with these children and the families who refuse to let them be a shadow generation,” said Founder and CEO Lenette Serlo.
