Huawei, IUCN, and Local Partners Launch Second Phase of Mexico Tech4Nature Project

During the recent Tech4Nature summit in Merida, Mexico on April 14, 2025, Huawei, the International Union of Conservation for Nature (IUCN), and local partners unveiled the second phase of the Mexico Tech4Nature project. This initiative aims to protect jaguars in the state reserve of Dzilam de Bravo and study the impact of climate change on biodiversity.

The official launch event was attended by representatives from the Mexican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the Yucatán state government, and local partner C-Minds. Dr. Marina Robles García, the Undersecretary of Biodiversity and Environmental Restoration for the Mexican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, emphasized the importance of addressing the decline in 42% of Mexico’s ecosystems through monitoring and restoration efforts.

In 2020, Huawei and IUCN launched the global partnership Tech4Nature to enhance conservation efforts through technological innovation. Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena of Yucatán highlighted the need for collaborative efforts involving science, technology, communities, and governments to drive successful conservation outcomes.

The first phase of the project involved installing audio devices and camera traps in the Dzilam de Bravo reserve to monitor wildlife, including jaguars. By April 2025, the system had identified 147 species and confirmed the presence of nine jaguars in the area. The second phase focuses on collecting data to better understand jaguar population distribution and support decision-making for habitat management.

The Tech4Nature summit brought together experts and leaders in nature conservation to discuss technological advancements in protecting ecosystems. Tao Jingwen, a board member at Huawei, emphasized the role of digital technology in efficient biodiversity conservation and called for more partners to join the Tech4Nature initiative.

In addition to Mexico, Tech4Nature projects in Brazil, China, Spain, Kenya, and Turkey were explored during the summit. These projects leverage AI analysis to address specific conservation needs in diverse ecosystems.

The summit underscored the importance of collaboration among the tech sector, NGOs, governments, academia, and local communities in advancing biodiversity and ecosystem protection.
